Safety/Security

The Safety Services area dates back to the mid 1950’s providing a safe and healthy workplace for all employees. Under the direction of Doug DeFilippo, the Safety Services Manager, Bill Knecht, Jenny Poole, and Lester Zmolek provide guidance and recommendations to GROWMARK facilities and member cooperatives in a three-state territory and Canada.

Our Safety Specialists keep up with the ever-changing OSHA, DOT, agricultural and fire marshal regulations. Training is a key component of accident prevention and our Safety Specialists put on over 200 safety-training programs annually. The Safety Services team are OSHA certified out-reach trainers, and are constantly looking to create new programs and update existing ones.

All members of the team provide emergency response and spill reporting assistance.

	Doug is responsible for the development and administration of proactive Safety, Health and accident prevention programs of the System. He oversees all OSHA and DOT regulatory compliance and loss prevention programs, and directs the staff of Safety Specialists. Doug began his career with GROWMARK as a Safety Specialist in 1976, and since 1986 has served as the Safety Service Manager. He earned Safety degrees from Illinois State University and Pennsylvania State University.

	Bill started with GROWMARK system in December of 1973 joining Safety Services in 1988. Bill has a degree in Business Administration, is a certified trainer through the OSHA Training Institute, and is trained at the HAZWOPER Technician Level. He assists GROWMARK and Member Cooperatives with Regulation Compliance and Loss Control Prevention programs. Performs specialized training in 8.0 Hour HAZWOPER, OSHA 10 Hour Construction, and First Aid. Provides training to local fire and police departments. Bill conducts on-site OSHA and DOT audits and facility inspections, and currently serves parts of the Southern and Northern Regions.

	Jenny began her career with GROWMARK as a Compliance Specialist in 1988. She earned a B.S. in Occupational Safety and an M.S. in Industrial Training and Development both from Illinois State University. Her territories include parts of the Northern and Southern Regions. Jenny can help you with any of your safety training needs, OSHA compliance, SARA Tier II, inspections and audits and DOT issues.

	Lester started his career with FS in 1976 at Tama County Farm Bureau. He started at GROWMARK as a Safety Specialist in 1992. More recently in 2008, he became a Senior Safety Specialist. He serves the member cooperatives of Iowa and Wisconsin and works closely with the GROWMARK facilities. He assists them in OSHA training of all employee’s, training of local emergency response personnel on hazardous materials releases, conducts on-site OSHA and DOT audits and facility inspections, and specializes in training for LP Gas, HAZWOPER and safety committees.

	Dawn joined GROWMARK in February 2007. She is responsible for administrative duties for the Safety Services and Environmental Services areas and, administers programs and services to member cooperatives and GROWMARK facilities. Dawn is also the editor of the Division’s monthly Environmental, Health, Safety and Insurance newsletter the “FS ALERT” as well as conducting the phone calls for the Home Safety Quiz. She also assists with the administration of the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) portion of the Federal, State and Provincial right-to-know regulations.

	Lindsay began her career at GROWMARK as a GROWMARK Energy Intern in the summer of 2008. In February 2009 she was hired full time in the position of EHS Coordinator. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Agribusiness from Illinois State University. Lindsay assists GROWMARK Safety Services and Environmental Services staff in evaluating, developing and promoting proactive EHS policies and programs. She provides guidance to member cooperative EHS personnel and GROWMARK facility managers in helping to maintain proactive EHS programs and regulatory compliance. She also tracks state and federal EHS regulations for distribution to GROWMARK facilities and member cooperatives. Lindsay provides direction relative to regulatory deadlines in the area of compliance permitting, recordkeeping and reporting. She also assists with the MSDS program.

	Nicole (Nikki) Riley joined GROWMARK in the position of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Associate effective January 2009. Nikki graduated from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky in December 2008 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety and Health. During her college career she served two internships, one with General Motors in Wilmington, Delaware and one with ADM in Destrehan, Louisiana. She is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers. In her position, Nikki will assist in the implementation and coordination of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) compliance programs for the GROWMARK facilities.
